Mural ProgressNext spring, an 1,800 square-foot public art landmark will be installed on the Clinton River Trail. The Rochester Community Mural, sponsored by Chief Financial Credit Union, will be located in Lake Norcentra Park on the Rochester College campus. Open to the public, the scenic park comprises 14 acres of high bluffs, historic buildings, wetlands, and woodlands in the heart of Rochester Hills.

Mural Selection

In April 2016, Rochester College and Chief Financial launched a mural design contest. Artists submitted proposals that represented the Rochester region. A jury of 13 community leaders and local artists chose three finalists. The public cast nearly 16,000 votes during the contest. A family-friendly design by children’s book artist Christine Gibson garnered the greatest number of votes.

Mural Painting

Led by Christine Gibson, in consultation with Mural Arts of Philadelphia, community volunteers began painting the mural on 72 5’x5’ panels in December 2016. The painting was finished nearly a month ahead of schedule during the first week of February 2017. Well over 150 volunteers assisted with the painting. Many volunteered on a regular basis. Rochester College is thankful for the volunteers, the sponsors, and the city of Rochester Hills for providing this opportunity for the community.

Next Step

In the spring, a consultant from Mural Arts will return to assist with installation of the mural on the Clinton River Trail in Lake Norcentra Park. Whether you primed, painted, helped special needs friends paint, or simply enjoyed watching on line, we hope you will visit Lake Norcentra Park this summer knowing you were a part of this incredible project.
