At Pebble Creek Park in Southfield, Mi., the Rochester College men’s soccer team, defeated NAIA Marygrove College 2-0 for their 3rd straight win.
The first half saw the Warriors and Mustangs playing an even match in terms of score, with the Warriors able to hold the edge in possession and opportunities on goal. The Warriors broke through late in the half when junior striker Brian Matlock won possession from the Mustang defender and served the ball across the box to junior midfielder John Wineland (Swartz Creek/Mott CC) who notched his 7th goal of the season and put the Warriors up 1-0 at halftime.
The 2nd half was much the same with the Mustangs beginning to gather momentum and create opportunities in the Warrior defensive 3rd. The Warriors withstood the Mustang push and settled down into their possession game. Matlock then put the Warriors up 2-0 with his 6th goal of the season on a nifty possession move and layoff by freshman midfielder Jon May (Linden/Linden) for his 5th assist of the season.
With around 12 minutes to go, from a tangle of players, the Warriors were accessed a red card ejection and were forced to play 1 man down for the remainder of the game.
The Warriors organized themselves in an attempt to hold off the superior numbers of the Mustangs. On several occasions the Warriors were able to win possessions and force the Mustangs to defend their box, while running the clock down. The Warriors managed to hold the Mustangs off the score board for the 2-0 victory on the road.
For the match the Warriors outshot the Mustangs 14-9. Senior goal keeper Dave Ristich (Waterford/Waterford Kettering) recorded the shutout making 4 saves.
