Concordia game recap from 9/21/2009

At Concordia University in Ann Arbor, Mi., the Rochester College Warriors dropped a hard fought match to the Cardinals 1-0 in double overtime with less than 50 seconds to go in the match.

In a very physical, back and forth match, neither team could take advantage of their scoring opportunities in regulation time. The Cardinals held the advantage creating 17 shots on goal for the match. Rochester generated 8 opportunities, none found the mark.

As was the case in regulation, neither team could get much done in the first 10 overtime period.  The Concordia keeper had a game saving stop with a minute to go in the first overtime on a shot from freshman Jon May (Linden/Linden).

In the second overtime, Concordia’s keeper once again thwarted the Warriors with a diving stop on a quick shot by the Warriors sophomore midfielder Lonnell Jones (Romeo/Romeo) with 2:10 left in the game.  Concordia came right back with their own opportunity but the Warrior defense broke down the attack.

The Cardinals came right back and capitalized on some defensive confusion by the Warriors and found a player open amongst the congestion in front of the RC goal and placed a shot into the corner of the net past senior goal keeper Dave Ristich with less than 50 seconds remaining in the 2nd overtime.

Ristich played a great match making several spectacular saves to keep the Cardinals off the score board. Ristich had 7 saves for the match.

Freshmen May, Eric Riden (Hazel Park/Hazel Park) and Chad Helberg (Hazel Park/Hazel Park) each made major contributions to the match. Leading scorer John Wineland (Swartz Creek/Mott CC) was playing extremely well before being injured in a collision with the Cardinal goal keeper.
