Warriors End "Home" Season With A Win Over Mustangs

On Saturday the Warriors would host their last home game of the season in a tough USCAA match up with the Mustangs of Marygrove College. Earlier in the season the Warriors traveled to Detroit and came home with a convincing 75-50 win. With the USCAA National Tournament on the horizon, the Warriors knew they would have to make a statement that they are poised and ready for the challenge of the tournament. The Mustangs were coming to make a statement of their own as the two teams could face one another again in the tournament.

Early on in the game the two teams would exchange baskets before the warriors would take control of the game. In the first meeting Adrian Schaffer dominated with 29 points, and would be the focus of the mustang defense this time around. While the Mustangs keyed on Schaffer, Steve McCune would take advantage of the situation by shooting 9 for 9 and scoring 20 points in the first half alone. With that the Warriors were able to take a comfortable lead into the half with a 43-29 advantage.

Coming out for the second half the Warriors knew that they would get the Mustangs best effort. The Mustangs would come out on an 10-2 run to start the second half before they forced a timeout by the Warriors. The timeout proved to be the wake up call the warriors needed as they would build a lead by as much as 28 points mid-way through the half. As the mustangs paid more attention to McCune who finished with 31 points on the game, it was Sophomore Grant Brown that would provide a spark in the second half as he would nail 3 3-pointers in rout to a 17 point performance off the bench. Adrian Schaffer would finish with his 3rd double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The win raises the Warrior season record to 22-6 while the Mustangs fell to 12-13. Next up for the Warriors will be a game at a much improved Andrews University. The last meeting with Andrews, the Warriors came out with a hard earned 68-46 win. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 pm and will mark the end of the regular season before the National Tournament.
