Rochester College hosted St. Clair College of Canada at Borden Park in Rochester Hills, Mi.
The Warriors, in an evenly matched contest with the Saints, played a strong 90 minute match in a physical, fast paced 3-1 win in front of their home crowd.
The Warriors and Saints played a spirited 1st 45 minutes with the Warriors creating 5 shots on goal to 4 shots on goal by the Saints. The half ended 0-0.
The Saints struck first late in the 2nd half as the Saint striker took advantage of a miscommunication by the Warrior defenders by intercepting a back pass and beating the Warrior GK, Sophomore Dave Ristich (Waterford Kettering), low and into the corner of the net.
The Warriors kept their composure and continued to work their transition game when Senior Jamie Whitehead (UK) sprung freshman striker Justin Sellers (Oakland Christian) through the back of the Saints defense. With the Saint keeper coming out to challenge him, Sellers chipped the ball over the keepers head to tie the score 1-1, with his 5th goal of the season.
Energized, the Warriors struck again on the same type of play when senior Calvin Marshall (Carman Ainsworth), with his 6th assist of the season, put senior Josh Hickey (Troy Athens) behind the Saint defense and again as the keeper came out to challenge Hickey, he also chipped the ball over the keeper, for his 3rd goal of the season, as the Warriors took the lead 2-1.
After several dangerous opportunities by the Saints, in their attempt to tie the score, the Warriors gathered their composure and freshman AJ Wells (Lake Orion) crossed the ball to freshman Jon Rowkoski (Chippewa Valley) who beat the last defender and pulled the keeper out then beat him low and into the back of the net for his team leading 6th goal of the season, and the Warriors took a 3-1 lead.. The Warriors then held off the Saints, for the 3-1 win, as they put up a spirited attack to get back into the game before time ran out.
Sophomore GK Dave Ristich (Waterford Kettering) faced 11 Saint shots for the match, several point blank, and had 5 saves. The Warriors out shot the Saints for the match 16 shots to 11.
The Warriors record is now 4-3-6. They next play Friday, 9/28 versus Grace Bible College, at 4:00pm., at the Warriors home field at Borden Park in Rochester Hills.
